- WILLIAM G. RANKIN, claim agent for Cook county, is one of
the many citizens of foreign
- birth who hold positions of responsibility and trust on the
great American railroads. He was born near Stratford, Ont., May
3, 1856, and was reared on the farm, attending the district schools.
On attaining maturity he followed farming for several years and
then came to the states, locating at Janesville, Wis. Here he
attended a business college learning short hand and telegraphy,
fitting himself for a railroad career. When competent to fill
a position he secured a place in the service of the Chicago &
Northwestern as stenographer at the Wood street transfer station
January 1, 1890, remaining with the company seven months. September
1st, the same year he entered the service of the Illinois Centralas
stenographer in the trainmasters office under Mr. Dunning, where
he continued four months, being next transferred to the office
of the division superintendent, he was next assigned to the office
of Mr. W. R. Head and served as
assistant and clerk until the appointment of Mr. Losey as chief
claim agent, since which time Mr. RANKIN has served as claim
agent for all personal injuries occurring in Cook county.
- Mr. RANKIN was married in London, Ont., December 26, 1885,
to Miss Lydia E. HESLOP,
- a teacher in the schools of the Dominion. Two sons have been
born to them, Garnet W. and Roy.
- Mr. RANKIN is a member of Hercules Court, No. 892, I.O.F.,
of Grand Crossing and of Arcanum Council, R.A., of Chicago. He
is a man well fitted by nature and training for the responsible
position he has to fill.
