- CHAMBERLAIN, Thomas Crowder, American geologist : b. Mattoon,
Ill.., 25 Sept. 1843. He
- was educated at Beloit College and the University of Michigan;
was professor of natural sciences in Whitewater Normal School,
Wis., 1869-73; professor of geology at Beloit College 1873-82;
president of the University of Wisconsin 1887-92 ; and has been
dean of the scientific faculty of the University of Chicago from
1892. He was assistant State geologist of Wisconsin 1873-6, and
State geologist from 1876. He is the author of 'Geology of Wisconsin'
and of many important papers printed by the United States Geological
Survey.
