ERASTUS GILBERT SMITH, M.A., Ph.D., son of Byron and Nancy (DWIGHT) SMITH, was
born in South Hadley, April 30, 1855; fitted for college at So. Hadley High School. Studied med., '77-'78; Tea. of Chem. and Eloc., Williston Sem., Easthampton, '78-'81; Prof., Chem. and Min., Beloit Coll., '81-. Mayor of the city of Beloit, '87-'92. Translated "The Determination of the Rock-forming Minerals." Pub. "A Manual of Chemical Analysis" and several pamphlets on chemical and sanitary themes. M.A., Amherst, 1880, Ph.D., Georgia Augusta Univ., Gottingen, Ger., 1883. Married, Dec. 26, 1883, Elizabeth, dau. of John MAYHER of Easthampton. Four children. [Alumnus of Amherst College, 1877]
