"John C. Devereaux"

John C. DEVEREAUX, whose portrait appears here, was born at
Orleans, Ontario Co., New York State, on the first of November 1833, where he lived until seventeen years old; in 1850 he accompanied his parents to Milwaukee, where he resided for three years and then in 1853, came to occupy a farm in this township, about four miles North-West of Evansville, called Burr Oak farm in consequence of this special timber growing there in all its primitive luxurance. Mr. DEVEREAUX' arduous duties in working his land (consisting of 150 acres) did not prevent the little god cupid from finding a venerable [vulnerable] point for one of his darts, after a short seige the garrison capitulated and on the 28th of May 1860, the God of love was declared victor and Mr. DEVEREAUX led Miss Phebe JOHNS to the hymeneal altar, Mrs. DEVEREAUX, nee JOHNS is a native of the Quaker state, born in Beaver
Co., Pennsylvania, the pleasant face and genial smile of both show that domestic happiness has reigned supreme in the household.
Mr. DEVEREAUX has three children, the eldest daughter Ida is married to John WALL, his
second daughter is wife of T. C. DAVIS, two of the prominent farmers in this township and his son Arthur B. remains on the farm to help his parents in looking after the Burr Oak property. A visit to Burr Oak Farm will reward anyone interested in agriculture and the value of thorough and careful farming will be impressed on the visitor. His barns are full of modern machinery, the cheese and butter factory is a picture of cleanliness and altogether the farm is a credit to the man and woman who have spent nearly 40 years of toil and study for its improvement.
Mr. DEVEREAUX has always been a staunch Republican, always voted with his party and nothing
but conscientious logical reasons will cause him to lower the standard which he raised in his early youth.
