- REV. W. SHUMWAY, was born Jan. 24, 1815; he came to Johnstown,
Rock Co., Wis., in
- 1844, and in the same year was ordained a minister of the
Christian Church; during the past thirty five or thirty-six years,
Mr. S. has preached nearly every Sabbath, while giving his attention
during the week- days to the transaction of other business; for
a period of eleven years, Mr. S. filled an appointment on Narrow
Prairie, Wis.; he is now preaching at Excelsior, near Reedsburg;
he lived to ten years in Rock Co., Wis.; then, in 1854, removed
to Reedsburg, Wis., where for two years he held a position in
a store; after this, he opened a meat market, and carried on
that business for two or three years, when he went out on a farm
three miles to the southeast of Reedsburg, where he spent eight
years; during this time, he did a little in the hop-raising business;
in May, 1876, he returned to town. Mr. S.was married April 10,
1836; Mrs. SHUMWAY was, before her marriage - Miss Sarah BUSHMAN;
she was born Dec. 29, 1816; she died July 1, 1877, leaving three
daughters - Hattie, now Mrs. SPRAGUE; Angie, now Mrs. MEDBURY,
and Matie, who is now Mrs. PIETZSH; the dates of their births
are; Hattie, born Nov. 18, 1842; Angie, July 25, 1845; Matie,
July 13, 1848.
