- This successful tiller of the soil is just in the prime of
life and is in the enjoyment of ample means, a
- wide circle of friends and the respect of all who know him.
He is a product of Rock County, Wis., where he was born May 16,
1848, a son of Joseph and Ellen (PUTNAM) FELLOWS, the former
of whom was born in Concord, N.H., a son of George FELLOWS, a
native of that State. The FELLOWS family settled in New Hampshire
at a very early period, having come to this country from England.
The PUTNAMS came of good old Puritan stock, and the grandparents,
John and Mary (PICKETT) PUTNAM, were natives of New Hampshire
and Vermont respectively. John PUTNAM came to Rock County, Wis.,
during the pioneer days of that region and settled on a farm
near Janesville, where he spent the rest of his days. His daughter,
Mrs. FELLOWS, was the only one of his children that reached maturity;
three other children died the first year that the family located
in Rock County. The paternal grandfather reared six children,
the survivors being Joseph and Jonathan, the latter being a business
man of Janesville. Joseph FELLOWS became a resident of Rock County,
Wis., in 1831, devoted his attention to farming, and is still
living near Janesville, being now seventy-two years old. His
wife died in 1873, at the age of forty-eight years, five children
surviving her: Harry, who lives in St. Paul, Minn.; William,
a resident of Rock County; John, who lives at Fort Atkinson;
Mary (Mrs. CALDO), at home, and Frank E. The education of Frank
E. FELLOWS was secured in Janesville, Wis., and in Milton College
of Milton, Wis. He has been in business for himself for the past
twenty years, and for the past twelve years has been engaged
in the insurance business. He came to Jefferson County, Wis.,
in 1888, and in 1891 built a residence on the farm, two miles
west of Jefferson, and here he has since resided. His wife was
formerly Miss Phoebe FOSTER, a daughter of Volney and Marrianne
(TORREY) FOSTER, both of whom died in this county. Volney FOSTER
was born in Antwerp, N.Y., October 20, 1816, and settled in Jefferson
County, Wis., in 1836, in 1846 married Marianne TORREY, had two
children, Volney W. (a business man of Chicago) and Phoebe (FOSTER)
FELLOWS. He died at the old homestead January 9, 1893. His wife
died December 3, 1888. The grandparents, William and Phoebe (VAN
SICKLER) TORREY were natives of New York. William TORREY came
to Jefferson, Wis., in 1846, and settled at the "Old Yellow
Tavern," where he died in 1869. Mrs. FELLOWS was born in
Portage City, this State, and she and her husband have one of
the most beautiful rural homes in the county, and are surrounded
by all that goes to make life enjoyable. Mr. FELLOWS has been
successful in his business ventures and although he lives on
his farm and looks carefully after its interests, he rents his
land, and thus has time to enjoy life. He has always been an
advocate of democratic principles, and socially belongs to the
I.O.O.F., in which lodge he has taken all the degrees, and has
represented his lodge in the Grand Lodge. He is also a Mason,
a member of Galesburg lodge, and has taken all the degrees in
the same except the 32d.
