- HON. H. N. DAVIS. In this connection it is, perhaps proper
to give a sketch of the Hon. H. N.
- DAVIS, state senator for Rock county. Mr. DAVIS was born
in Henderson, Jefferson county, New York, June 17th, 1812. His
early advantages were better than those of most young men of
that period. He received a thorough academic education. Always
active and enterprising, he removed from York State to Wisconsin
in 1838, first settling in Waukesha. He was a resident of that
town for twenty-five years, following agricultural pursuits for
the first fifteen years. During this time he held the position
of chairman of the board of supervisors of the town six successive
years, and was twice elected chairman of the county board; was
elected county treasurer in 1847, and held the office by subsequent
elections for six years. He was commissioned by President Lincoln
March 1862 captain and commissary of subsistence, and was brevetted
major in 1864. At the termination of the war he left the service
and closed all his accounts with the several departments - amounting
in the aggregate to a million and a half of dollars - within
sixty days after his discharge. Immediately upon his return he
was elected president of the Beloit National Bank and has held
that position for seven years. Was elected mayor of this city
in April, 1872 and again in 1873. Was elected state senator for
the county of Rock (17th dist.) November, 1872, and received
a majority of 3,500 over his opponent. He is now engaged in wholesale
merchandising in this city. Mr. DAVIS is a courteous, dignified
and intelligent gentleman; a wise legislator, a true friend and
an honorable man. He is the father of the governor elect of Minnesota
and is regarded by all as one of our representative men. [written
