"Phila Wright"

Phila WRIGHT was the eldest child of Ambrose WRIGHT and his wife Elizabeth
(PATTERSON) WRIGHT. She was born at Wrightstreet in the town of Durham, Greene County, NY, March 12, 1795, and was on of the most cheerful and efficient persons to be seen in that vicinity. Fine looking, tall and commanding in appearance, sympathetic and unselfish in her nature, she grew to be the favorite of both the young and the old. She was educated in the district school where she was loved by her school mates for her kindness and for the manner she turned all their troubles into drollery, thus helping them to forget they had anything to complain of. Phila married William MOORE, the son of Philip MOORE, neighbor and farmer. With him she settled first at Cobbleskill County, NY, thence moved to Montgomery County. They were successful farmers and became well-to-do.
Mr. MOORE became interested in an ancient claim to a large property in England, and as an agent
for the claimants visited England with a view to acquiring possession of the property. The result of the undertaking was disastrous to William's finances. Then, Mr. and Mrs. MOORE returned to Wrightstreet and settled in one of her father's houses. It is said that "misfortunes never come singly." Be that true or not, Mr. MOORE was soon burned out, sweeping the family clean of everything. After this event, Mr. MOORE sold a little property he had saved from the former wreck and turned his and his wife's faces toward Wisconsin, where most of their children had preceded them. They settled in Magnolia Township, Rock County, on a farm, where they became comfortable again, where they died and were buried at Maple Grove Cemetery - West Magnolia. Phila (WRIGHT) MOORE had eleven children, named as follows:
  • Philander MOORE, who married Julia WARD
  • Montgomery MOORE, who married Lucy STONE
  • William MOORE, Jr. who married Harriet TIMMERION
  • Ambrose MOORE, who first married Lucy Ann PUTNAM, and who second married Sarah C. COLE
  • Philip MOORE
  • Maria Elizabeth MOORE, who married Peter MERRITT
  • Caroline MOORE, who married John CHRISTY
  • John Ely MOORE, who married Elizabeth WRIGHT
  • Zeba Clark MOORE, who married Rhoda RODD
  • Clinton W. MOORE, who married Abby Jane BABCOCK
