- WILLIAM J. McINTYRE, farmer, Sec. 1; P.O. Whitewater; born
in County Derry, Ireland; is a
- son of Hercules and Mary A. McINTYRE, of Scotch descent;
came to Wisconsin with his parents in 1848, and settled in Jefferson
Co.; William McINTYRE came to Rock Co., in 1868, and settled
on the farm he now owns, of 101 acres; his father died Jan. 14,
1859, and his mother is still living with her son. He is Republican;
was elected Supervisor in 1871, and Chairman of Town Board in
1875; has held the office continually since. He enlisted in
the 12th Wis. Light Artillery, December, 1863; the battery was
with Sherman; having joined him, they went to Altoona Pass, and
met the rebels in defense of the forts under Gen. Corse, which
desperate fight has become historic from the fact of its having
furnished the name for a popular hymn; he was with Gen. Sherman
at the capture of Atlanta, and on his march to the sea, and through
the Carolinas, remaining with his battery until it was mustered
out at Madison, Wis., July 11, 1865. The family are members
of the M. E. Church.
