- GUY WHEELER - Was born in Monroe County, New York, in October,
1820. J. P.
- WHEELER, his father, came to Rock County, in 1840, and located
four hundred and eighty acres of land, after which he returned
to New York, and in May, 1842, emigrated with his family to his
farm in Rock County, where he continued to live until his death.
Guy WHEELER located his present farm in 1844, consisting of two
hundred and forty acres of as good land as is found in the County.
The meeting to organize the town was held at the residence of
Mr. WHEELER, and at the suggestion of his brother, Samuel P.,
the town was called La Prairie, and Guy WHEELER elected the first
town clerk, which position he held for five years. Was married
in October, 1844, to Anna L., daughter of A. F. SNELL, of Fort
Atkinson, Wisconsin. They have reared a family of four children,
three of whom are still living. He was elected to the State legislature
in 1864, and although never prominently before the public as
a leader, many offices of trust have been tendered and declined
by him, he preferring the quiet home-life to the excitement of
the political arena. A view of his residence can be seen on another
page of this work.
