- JOSEPH SPAULDING - Is a native of Athens, Bradford County,
Pennsylvania, where he was
- born on the 23d day of August, 1812. He was the sixth child
of John and Elizabeth SPAULDING. Mr. SPAULDING's education was
obtained in the public schools of his native State. His vocation
through life has been that of a farmer. He first visited the
West in the fall of 1856 [1836], after traveling over considerable
territory. He returned the same season to Pennsylvania, and during
the following spring emigrated to Rock County, by team, - this
trip consuming forty days, - arriving where the city of Janesville
now stands on the 23d day of April, 1837; stopping for awhile
at what was known as JANES' Tavern, the only house at that time
in that vicinity. He shortly located four hundred and eighty
acres of land, four hundred of which he still owns and has under
a high state of cultivation. He kept bachelor's hall for two
years, after which he returned to Pennsylvania on horseback,
and thence to Connecticut, where he was married on the 7th day
of February, 1839, to Lydia S. ELLSWORTH, returning West immediately
after. They have reared a family of six children. Mr. SPAULDING
was a member of the State legislature for two terms, viz., 1853,
1863. Is a strong supporter of all religious and educational
interests, as well as other public enterprises connected with
the interests of his township. A view
