"Joseph Spaulding"

JOSEPH SPAULDING - Is a native of Athens, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, where he was
born on the 23d day of August, 1812. He was the sixth child of John and Elizabeth SPAULDING. Mr. SPAULDING's education was obtained in the public schools of his native State. His vocation through life has been that of a farmer. He first visited the West in the fall of 1856 [1836], after traveling over considerable territory. He returned the same season to Pennsylvania, and during the following spring emigrated to Rock County, by team, - this trip consuming forty days, - arriving where the city of Janesville now stands on the 23d day of April, 1837; stopping for awhile at what was known as JANES' Tavern, the only house at that time in that vicinity. He shortly located four hundred and eighty acres of land, four hundred of which he still owns and has under a high state of cultivation. He kept bachelor's hall for two years, after which he returned to Pennsylvania on horseback, and thence to Connecticut, where he was married on the 7th day of February, 1839, to Lydia S. ELLSWORTH, returning West immediately after. They have reared a family of six children. Mr. SPAULDING was a member of the State legislature for two terms, viz., 1853, 1863. Is a strong supporter of all religious and educational interests, as well as other public enterprises connected with the interests of his township. A view of his residence and surroundings can be seen on another page of this work.
