- A. M. CARTER - Hon. A. M. Carter, one
of the earliest settlers of the township of Johnstown,
- was born in Litchfield, Connecticut,
October 14, 1814, and was taken to Paris, Oneida County, New
York, the following year, where he lived until 1843, during which
time he graduated at Hamilton Academy. Mr. CARTER emigrated with
his family to Rock County, Wisconsin, where he located one hundred
and sixty acres of government land, and has added to his purchase
until now he has a prairie farm of two hundred and forty-four
acres, with good house, barn, granaries, and other outbuildings,
and forty acres of good timber. He was married to Miss Dollie
WADHAM, of Litchfield, Connecticut, and afterwards to Miss Sarah
WEDG. The fruits of his first marriage were three children, of
who two are still living, - Charles and Ellen. He also has one
child by his second wife, - Miss Frankie. Mr. C. was a member
of the convention at Madison which framed the Constitution of
Wisconsin,; a member of the County board of commissioners, and
assessor of the township for a number of years; also a member
of the State legislature in 1868. Politically he has always been
a strong supporter of the Republican party; has always been among
the most prominent gentlemen of his township, and a highly respected
citizen. A view of his residence is shown in this work.
