"Elmer L. Barnes"

ELMER L. BARNES, who was born March 7, 1873, is a son of Richard and Ella (PECK)
BARNES, natives of England and Vermont, respectively. The father was born in 1832 and the mother in 1843. They came to Rock county over half a century ago, and for twenty-two years Milton Junction, where they still live, and has been their home.
Elmer is the younger of two children, Mary Luella is the wife of Frank MARYATT, and resides in
Milton township.
The subject of this sketch received his early education in the public schools at Milton Junction,
and from 1892 to 1900 was engaged in steam and electrical engineering. In 1900 he purchased the elevator at Milton and has since successfully conducted a large flour, feed and grain business. Since engaging in the grain business, he has rebuilt his elevator, which is now modern in its appointments and equipped with a new thirty-two horse power engine of the Fairbanks & Morse type.
In political faith, Mr. BARNES is identified with the Republican party, though taking no active
part in the affairs of the party, except to perform his duties as a citizen. He is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and a progressive and enterprising citizen, commanding the respect and confidence of his large circle of friends, in the community in which he resides.
On November 15, 1894, Mr. BARNES was married to Miss Clara GARTHWAIT, daughter of
L. H. and Hannah (JENKINS) GARTHWAIT, of Milton Junction. To this union has been born three children; Lottie L., George R. and Herbert E. Their home at Milton is built of concrete blocks, and is modern in construction and appointments.
