- T. A. SMITH, Professor of Mathematics and Chemistry, Beloit
College; was born in Morgan
- Co., Ohio, Oct. 13, 1847, and came to Wisconsin about August
26, 1877, locating at Beloit; Mr. SMITH received a common-school
education in Morgan Co., assisted his father on the farm and
taught school three terms; from there he went to Muskingum College,
New Concord, Ohio, where he took a classical course; after graduating,
he taught school for two years; in 1874, he went to Yale College
and studied three years, graduating in 1877, when he took his
Ph. D. degree; after spending a month or two at home, he came
to Beloit and accepted the position of Instructor of Mathematics
and Chemistry in Beloit College; Mr. SMITH was a member of Board
of Examiners of Muskingum Co., Ohio. He married, July 12, 1877,
Martha Jane McCALL, of Morgan Co. Ohio. Mr. and Mrs. SMITH are
members of the First Congregational Church.
