- DR. GEORGE CAREY, physician and surgeon, State street; was
born in Smithfield, Jefferson
- Co., Ohio; came to Wisconsin about 1847, and located at Beloit;
from Smithfield he went to Bucyrus, Crawford Co., Ohio, where
his father built the first house; from Bucyrus he went to Mr.
Pleasant to attend the Quaker Seminary, where he took a full
seminary course, occupying three years; from Mt. Pleasant, removed
to Hanoverton, Columbiana Co., Ohio, and studied medicine three
years with Drs. Robertson and Cary, who stood very high in their
profession in that county; from Hanoverton he removed to Paris,
Stark Co., where he practiced with Dr. Preston, a man who was
thoroughly devoted to his profession; from Paris he went to New
York City; attended a course of lectures at the Medical Department
of the University, at which time the well-known Dr. Valentine
Mott was Professor of Surgery; from New York City he went back
to Georgetown, Columbiana Co., and practiced there four years;
thence to Beloit, where he is having a good practice. Dr. CAREY
married in the spring of 1848, Catherine G. GORDON, of Orono,
Me.; they have three children living - Lewis A., George and Ellen
Oakley. Both are members of the Congregational Church at Beloit.
