- WILLIAM FANING, farmer, Secs. 9 and 18; P.O. Janesville;
born in County Kilkenny, Ireland,
- in November, 1825; came to New York in 1851, by way of Quebec
and Montreal; located in Washington Co., N.Y., and engaged at
farming; worked for a time on the Whitehall & Hudson River
Railroad. Married, in Whitehall, Nov. 19, 1856, Miss Ellen KEEFE,
who was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland. They have had eight
children; seven are living - Patrick, William, John, Michael,
Edward, James and Hannah. Mr. FANING came from New York, with
his wife, to McHenry Co., Ill.; lived there and farmed for two
years. He came, in 1858, to Wisconsin and located in Janesville
Township, where he remained until 1869; then he came to Harmony
Township and bought the farm of fifty acres on which he now lives.
The farm was unimproved. Mr. FANING and his boys have improved
it, cleared the timber, built fences, barns, etc. Every acre
of the farm is under cultivation. They raise the usual crops.
Mr. FANING is a Democrat. He and his family are members of the
Janesville Catholic Church. Mr. FANING's son William assists
his father in working the farm. He owns and operates a threshing
machine.
