- JOHN P. FONDA, farmer, Sec. 11; P.O. Shopiere; born in Montgomery
Co., N.Y., April 8,
- 1812; son of Peter FONDA, a prominent and wealthy farmer
in that county; his father was a brave soldier in the Revolutionary
war, and was taken prisoner; Peter FONDA died in 1861 in New
York; was about 75 years old; John R. FONDA came to Turtle, Wis.,
in June, 1845, and settled on one and a quarter acres, then bought
forty acres, and through industry and frugality, now has 300
acres under good cultivation; has fine barns and general stock;
was burned out in 1875, and lost about $2,500, but has built
up again. Married on Oct. 18, 1844, in Montgomery Co., N.Y.,
Margaret HILTS, daughter of Capt. John H., of old Dutch stock;
have had five children - Giles, Peter, Margaret, Ann and Nettie,
all living at home. Mr. FONDA gave his aid and moral support
to the cause of the great North at the time of the recent unpleasantness.
