- C.W. LAWRENCE - The subject of this sketch was born in Susquehanna
County, Pennsylvania,
- on the 29th day of July, 1812. Mr. Wm. LAWRENCE emigrated
with his family to Rock County, Wisconsin, in May 1837, and located
in what is now called Beloit Township. Clark spent two years
in Rockford, Illinois, in the pursuit of different kinds of business,
after which he too came to Rock County, and located a farm on
section 36, consisting of two hundred and eighty acres, all of
which is now under a high state of cultivation, with a large
and convenient house and beautiful surroundings, barns, granaries,
and other necessary out-buildings. Mr. LAWRENCE received only
a common school education, and at the age of twenty-five years
was married to Hannah M., daughter of John and Anna LEWIS, on
the 12th of April, 1838. Mr. LAWRENCE has been successful in
the acquisition of property, his success being attributable to
close application to business, united with a rigid course of
honest and fair dealing. He was chairman of the board of supervisors
for two years, has served as chairman of the town board, etc.
He built the first frame dwelling erected in the town in the
spring of 1839. Is an extensive dealer in horses and cattle,
and pays considerable attention to the growing of fine wool,
Spanish sheep. A lithographic view of his residence may be seen
