John Smith is my great-great-grandfather but, we have very little information
about him. His son Jacob Oliver Smith was born 4/1/1868 in Riley Township, Butler
County, Ohio. John didn't raise
Jacob.
Cornelia Maria Van Ausdall, Jacob's mother, was born 4/19/1848 in Riley Township, Butler County, Ohio
and died 4/2/1930 in Hamilton, Ohio. Her parents were Silas and Rebecca Van Ausdall.
Maria married William Doan in 1870. After William died,
John visited Maria in Hamilton, Ohio. Her daughter Dora wrote a letter
dated 10/1-1900 giving these details: John's wife had died, he had a daughter and
2 sons and the romance remained between John and Maria. The photo was given to
Jacob's daughter Marie when she was a child. She is now 80+ and wishes to
know as much as possible about John and his family. Any information would be
appreciated. By Lisa Clements, 2001

From the OHButler-L group: "Would anyone know where a person, living in Oxford Twp. in 1930, would have gone to high school?"
Gene answered:
"A resident of Reily Township would have gone to Reily High School, in Reily, Ohio, Butler County........if they were closer to Oxford, they would have gone to Stewart, since Talawanda didn't exist until I was in school, in the 50's. Talawanda was made up of more than one school district, supposedly to save money and give the kids a better education, but there was a lot of resentment from some of the constituents for taking their local school (Morgan High School, at Okeana, Ohio) away from them.
Depending on where they lived, they either went to Ross or Talawanda. Reily and Morgan both ended up as lower-grade schools. Smith Library, at Oxford, will have all of the information that you need."
