LATIN

Heraldry and Genealogy:
The Reference Library

Top OF Page

 The Latin style of heraldry is primarily found in the armorial achievements of southern France, Andorra, Portugal, Spain, and Italy.  This overall custom differs from the other European heraldic traditions as follows:

(1)   It is characterized by a lack of crests, and uniquely shaped shields;

occasionally Portuguese and Spanish heralds added words to the coats of arms, a practice the is absolutely prohibited within British heraldry;

(2)     Latin heraldry is known for extensive use of quartering, because of armorial inheritance via both the male and the female lines.

(3)     Italian heraldry is especially dominated by the Roman Catholic Church, thus featuring many shields and achievements, most bearing some reference to the Church.

(4)      Trees are frequent charges in Latin arms. Charged bordures, including bordures inscribed with words, are seen often in Spain.

ITALIAN HERALDRY

(Italy, Papal State)

In Italy only the noble class was entitled to bear coats of arms. The kings rewarded persons who performed a heroic deed or notable achievement or who held a prominent position in government by granting them a noble title and the right to use a coat of arms. These grants were documented. Various authors in Italy have prepared armorials, or heraldry books. An armorial is a collection of descriptions of coats of arms and the families that bear them. It also briefly describes the family’s entitlement to a particular coat of arms. It may also note early bearers of a coat of arms, sometimes with relationships, birth dates, and other genealogical information. Each armorial is different from others and includes different names. Some minor noble families are not included in any books.

PORTUGEUSE HERALDRY

(Portugal, Brazil)

      Portuguese heraldry has been in use at least since the 12th century.   Heralds were first introduced during the reign of James I (1385-1433).  A complete record of Armorial bearings was completed in 1509 by the King of Arms and Portuguese continued to be regulated by the heralds until 1910, when the monarchy was replaced by a republic.

      The heraldic traditions of Portugal are similar to those of southern France, Andorra, Portugal, Spain, and Italy.   Generally referred to as the Latin style it is characterized by a lack of crests, and uniquely shaped shields.  Portuguese heraldry will occasionally introduce words to the shield of arms, a practice disallowed in British heraldry. Latin heraldry is known for extensive use of quartering, because of armorial inheritance via the male and the female lines. Charged bordures and trees are frequent in Latin arms.

SPANISH HERALDRY

(Spain, Andorra)

The tradition and art of heraldry first appeared in Spain at about the beginning of the eleventh century AD and its origin was similar to other European countries : the need for knights and nobles to distinguish themselves from one another on the battlefield, in jousts and in tournaments. Knights wore armor from head to toe and were often in leadership positions, so it was essential to be able to identify them on the battlefield.
