Blossvale Notes - Philander Lane, so long a sufferer from a cancer, died last Friday morning. He was sensible to the last moment, and made every provision for his funeral, selected Rev. Mr. Ford, of North Bay, to officiate at his funeral, the bearers, and choose for the test the first verse of CXX Psalm. The funeral was held at the Lee Church, State Road, and a large concourse of neighbors and friends gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased.

Layaz, Mary Rohbasser

Rome Sentinel
May 27, 1891

On Sunday at 2 pm in Lee occurred the funeral of Mrs. Louis Layaz, who was so brutally murdered by her husband. People were in attendance from far and near, more from curiosity than out of respect. It was the largest attended funeral that ever took place in that locality, over 500 persons being present about the premises. The services were conducted by Rev. T. H. McClenthen of Lee Center, assisted by Rev. William Fisher of Lee. The remains were interred in the south side of the Lee Valley Cemetery. On the plain casket was the inscription, “Our Mother’. August, Louis, Alice and Lucy, the children of the deceased, and a few distant reliaves, were the only mourners. The children have all secured good homes among the neighbors, excepting August, who is able to care for himself.

At the inquest on Monday afternoon the examination of witnesses was concluded by Assistant District Attorney Townsend. Several witnesses were sworn, but no new facts were elicited aside from those already published in the Citizen. The coroner’s jury found that Mrs. Layaz came to her death on May 21 from injuries inflicted on her person by an ax in the hands of her husband, May 16, and that the deed was done with premeditation and deliberation, and with intent to kill.

After the inquest Monday afternoon Layaz was arraigned before the coroner on the verdict of the jury, to which he pleaded not guilty, waived examination, and was committed to jail to await the action of the grand jury.
