back Bacon’s “Reesons” next
To this point, Bacon seems to have represented himself in his dealings with Danforth’s court. With a full jury trial in the offing, however, he now retained John Hoare,* attorney of Concord, to draft a set of “Reesons” to justify his appeal.

I’m no lawyer, thank the Lord, but even I can discern the sheer pettifogging barratry of this very ugly document. Don’t try to read it on this page: it’s too small, and Hoare’s handwriting (not to mention his prose and his logic) lacks the clarity of Danforth’s. If you’re curious about the details, please check out this three-part enlargement.

*I should probably be punished for opining that Mr Hoare should have spelled his name otherwise. The pronunciation’s fine. Others have remarked upon it, too.
