| Vilate Clarissa Decker Young |

Clarissa Decker Young,
Harriet’s younger daughter and our
great-great-aunt, became Brigham
Young’s third wife in plural marriage (fifth overall)
before her sixteenth birthday.
She is reported to have argued that she had to come with the Pioneers “to take care of Mama.” It is not recorded that Brigham objected with any energy. Clarissa (she went by “Clara” most of her life) was, by some accounts at least, in the carriage with Brigham when he said, “This is the right place…” As a toddler, she survived a horrific accident in Freedom, Cattaraugus County, New York, her birthplace. Here’s her most widely published portrait, and here’s one from the former Visitors’ Center that they used to identify, incorrectly, as our Aunt Clarissa. |
