Dr. Joseph Munroe (13 June 1757 - 24 February 1798),
Hepzibah’s first cousin and
therefore mine (1C7R). Born, like her, in Billerica.
Grandson and namesake of Corporal Joe
Munroe, youngest son of William
Munroe the Immigrant of Lexington. As far as I’m
aware, the first of William’s many distinguished
descendants to be known as “Doctor.”
”He studied medicine with Dr. Francis Kittredge, of
Tewksbury, Mass., and settled in Hillsborough, N.H. near the
Centre on the Dunbar Place around 1784. He was the second
physician in the town. Doctor Munroe had an extended practice
reaching into the adjoining towns. He made call upon call
among his patients at a time when sickness was exceptionally
prevalent for three successive days without rest or sleep
until the unusual exertion brought on the brief illness which
resulted in his death at an early age.”*
Early indeed: Dr. Joseph died aged 40, before the 14th
anniversary of his marriage to Azubah
Henry.
