Before Carlisle Was: Concord

Silversmith, engraver, and Revolutionary soldier Amos Doolittle came to Concord from Connecticut in 1775, about a fortnight after the Lexington Alarm. Looked around, interviewed people, and illustrated the historic events in four famous engravings, the best and most contemporary visual depictions that have survived.

This is the second of the four. It shows Redcoat Lt. Col. Leslie Smith and his second-in-command Major John Pitcairn standing among the gravestones in Concord’s oldest cemetery, the Hill Burying Ground. We’re looking southward across Monument Street (full of the King’s might) toward the Town.
