Location

This little known graveyard and ruined church are just off the Knockagh Road, to the north of Monkstown, Co. Antrim, but can only be reached through 3 fields, climbing a number of gates, and pushing through some dense undergrowth, especially during the summer months.  Clues to its location can be seen from the Knockagh Road, and the Old Carrick Road (Upper Road, Greenisland), from the yew trees, conifers and rhododendrons which proliferate Irish Graveyards.  The Pound Burn stream flows along the eastern boundary of the graveyard, before making its way through Monkstown before joining with the Three Mile Water before Bleachgreen Viaduct.

The current ordnance survey map for Antrim lists ‘Monkstown Church’, but the location is somewhat misleading.   The amended map above shows the exact location of the site, and is at OS ref J345858.  The easiest way to get into the site is to climb the gate opposite the DOE pumping station on the Knockagh Road, walk along the hedgerow to the next gate on the left, climb this and go diagonally across the field to the far corner, where there is a very old farm gate.  Climb this, andmonkstown_cemetery_1_small.jpg (1532 bytes) again go diagonally across this overgrown field (which is part of the graveyard) towards the yew trees.  The 1903 1:10000 OS map shows that this is a right of way from the Knockagh Road to the site.
