| A Little History of Cherington and Stourton, Warwickshire |
| Population Censuses |
The first British census was taken in 1801, and the decision taken to repeat this event every ten years. A few local censuses survive from the earliest years, but these generally contain only the names of the householders and numbers of persons in each house, with their sex and approximate age, but little other detail. The 1841 census is the first to provide much information of real use to the family historian.
Of the censuses open to public scrutiny (1901 and earlier), much is available on the internet, but at a price. Transcriptions made by volunteers are scattered over various websites; some have been collected together here.
