KILAUEA LIGHTHOUSE
KAUAI, HAWAII

Original photos submitted by Ben Haun

Ben writes..."I visited Kauai, Hawaii in July of this year [1999] .... Kilauea Lighthouse [is] on the Northeast Coast .... [It] is open to the public (at least the grounds are) as part of a park and wildlife refuge. Supposedly it has the largest clam shell Fresnel lens still in existence."

THE LENS

The Lens of Kilauea Lighthouse, Kauai, Hawaii

Kilaluea Lighthouse was completed in 1913. The original lens had to be turned by a cable/pulley system which required its keepers to rewind the cable onto a drum every 3 1/2 hours. Improvements to the lighthouse replaced the original oil vapor lamp with an electric one and the manual turning of the lens was now accomplished by means of an electric drive. The lighthouse, decommissioned in 1976, is now on the National Register of Historic Places and contains exhibits which illustrate its history.
