This
unusual lady was a frequent visitor at the Duffy home. She had been
a high school classmate of Ethel and also went to college with her at
the University of California at Berkeley. Eleanor's home was in San
Rafael. She owned a beautiful saddle horse named Prince, and would
often ride to San Quentin on her horse to visit the Duffys. She
always rode with a Western saddle, even though side saddle was the
usual method used by women at that time. Slacks were not used by
women, but she wore a divided skirt.
When
she graduated from the University she joined the staff of the San
Rafael High School. Here we had the opportunity to know her even
better, as she taught English classes to all of us through the years.
She even taught some of the second generation of Duffy children. I
have always felt that her influence on me as a teacher was the
greatest in my whole life. I often wonder how many thousands of young
people were inspired by her teaching. She taught the Joy of Learning
and inspired a Desire for Knowledge.
She
is now retired, living in San Rafael near her daughter, and has kept
active in education affairs and library work.
