The Heathens

Return to People

Fred and Sue Hogeboom lived just a couple of houses up the hill from the east gate. Fred became a hero when he led the capture of the Yacht Bandits during an attempted escape from the prison. Sue, on the other hand, was active in the social part of the village. She was always inviting people over for a piece of her Lovely Big Coconut Cake, a phrase that became synonymous with Sue.

Early in 1934, Sue was on a mission to find as many children in the village, who had not been baptized, and to do something about it. She contacted the mothers of the village and rounded up the children for a mass baptism, which, by the way, included a couple of the parents.

They were baptized at the First Presbyterian Church of San Rafael, on March 29, 1934, by Pastor John Jefferson Canoles.

                        * - Known San Quentin resident

In addition to the above, thirty five other people joined the church this day but had been baptized previously. Their names are not listed. Some of these may have been from San Quentin village.

Quite a glorious day for Sue Hogeboom!
