Ferries

 Photos: Donald Zubler Collection

The pier and ferry slip was extended into deeper water after the train trestle was removed. This may have been necessary due to the many years of dumping polutants into the bay, raising the bay floor. The ferry is the Ellen.

The Charles Van Damme ferry operating between Richmond and point San Quentin.

The man in the middle is about to pull the pin in the bow. When the ferry leaves the slip this bow becomes the rudder to steer the ferry to Richmond. Likewise, a pin is inserted in the rudder at the other end of the ferry as it will become the stationary bow.
