> (Abstract From The Gleaner Newspaper-Feb.04,1898)
> A Cutting Scrape: A fight occurred in the Probate Office last Saturday morning, between Mr. Bob Loard, who lives a few miles out in the country, and Mr. Hadley Y. Brooke, editor of the Journal. We know nothing as to the cause of the trouble but feel safe in saying that it was neither whiskey nor politics. Both men were cut but not seriously. Mr. Loard had several gashes above the head and shoulder, and Mr. Brooke one ugly gash in the thigh The doctors were on hand and immediately dressed the wounds of both and put them in buggies and sent them home.
>
> Up Date Feb. 25,1898 - The trial of H Y Brooke charged with assault and battery, was tried in the city court last Monday, and Brooke who pleaded self defense, was fined $5.00 and cost, but takes an appeal to the circuit court. Loard plead guilty to the same charge, and was assessed the same fine... The evidence in the case developed the fact that Loard made the first assault by striking Brooke with his fist, and had Brooke returned the blow with his fist only, his plea of self defense would have been good, but when he drew his knife and went to work on Loard, he then became assaulting party.
