CHAPEL & SUNDAY SCHOOL
|
In 1883, work had been going on with the Sunday School for over sixteen years, but as the Local Board of Health gave notice that they required the room in which the school was held, a decision had to be made as to whether they continued the work or abandon it, which would mean that the children would wander the streets on a Sunday. After a lot of deliberation, it was decided to build. The memorial stones were laid on 9th August 1883. The cost of the stones were just under £21.15s.0d, and the dimensions of the school were 36 feet long, by 18 feet wide. It had a king-post roof, and the rafters were covered by V-jointed matchboard, laid diagonally and varnished. Heating was provided by two airing stoves. There was also an infant classroom, 13 feet by 12 feet, with a copper that had water laid on. The total cost of the building was £260. The Sunday School, Band of Hope and Christian Endeavour continued successfully for many years. NB: See photos in the photo gallery. Photos
