"Born near this Moscow site, son of a State Senator, Judge Edwin E Hobby.
At age 17 joined the staff of the "Houston Post" and rose to
managing editor
at 23. Was named Publisher of "Beaumont Enterprise in 1907.
Elected Lt. Govenor in 1914 and 1916. Became Governor ar the
impeachment
of James E. Ferguson in 1917. Won re-election to serve his full
term
1919-1921. Was appointed to First Board of Regents, Texas Technological
College, 1924. President of "Houston Post" 1924-1964.
Married in 1931 Oveta Culp, Parliamentarian of the
Texas House of Representatives. For the next quarter of a century,
shared with his wife editorial administration of the "Post" sparing
her
during World War II to serve as Commander of Women's Army
Corps of the United States Forces and during 1953-1955 to serve
in the cabinet of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Their children are William, Pettus, JR., and Jessica.
As Govener, term was marked by initiation of free school books,
Compulsory School Attendance Law, budget system in state government,
State Drought Relief, Texas participation in WWI and the effecting
of
Women's Sufferage in the state and nation."
