Pioneer Israel and his descendants
ISRAEL PICKENS
A ISREAL PICKENS, one of the Pickens pioneers who came to America from Ireland, first settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, about the year 1720.
Records in Augusta County, Virginia, in which the name of Israel Pickens appears, show conclusively that he moved from Pennsylvania to Virginia, and he evidently went there about the same time that Andrew Pickens and John Pickens removed there which must have been about 1740.
Augusta County records in Virginia show that Israel Pickens died in 1749.
We find the record of Inventory of the Estate of Israel Pickens, Anson county Court House. (North Caroina, 1758 nearest date.)
"A just inventory of the estate of Israel Pickens."
3 horses - 1 stallion - 5 mares - 9 cows - 3 heifers - 1 bull - stares - 7 calves - 1 wagon and proper tackin for 2 horses. A set of Mill irons - 49 gallon still - 1 pr. plow irons and tackle - 1 broad ax - 1 mattock - 1 sprouting hoe - 1 seth - 1 cross cut saw - 1 cutting knife and sword - 1 pari of mall rings and two wedges - 5 hoes - 3 iron pots - 1 brass kettle - 2 pot racks - 3 feather beds - and furniture - 5 petwer dishes - 9 plates - some wooden war - 2 augers - 1 chisel - 1 gauge - some shoe makers tools - 1 hand saw - 8 men's saddles - 2 women's ditto - 7 bridles - 1 chest - 1 trunk - 1 box iron - 1 standing iron - 5 suttles.
Note: - we will render anything that belongs to said estate at the time of praisern that may be at this time forgot in this inventory which at this time passible may be forgotten by us as we have not the opportunity at this time to take avvice of said estate."

B MARGARET Pickens, daughter of the pioneer, Israel Pickesn, was born, probably in Pennsylvania about 1740, and died near the old Waxhaw Settlement in South Caroina, December 22nd, 1793. Her grave is in the historic Waxhaw Presbyterian Church cemetery, in Lancaster County. She lived a long and useful life.
About 1765 Margaret Pickens married Captain Janes B. Walkup, son of Samuel and Nancy (Alexander) Walkup. James B. Walkup was also buried in the cemetery of the Waxhaw Presbterian Church. It is said that his tombstone has the coat of arms of the Walkup family and that the Pickens coat of arms is on the tombstone of Margaret (Pickens) Walkup.

He was married three times. First, April 9th, 1869 to Ann Elizabeth Hunter, who died August 24th, 1872 without issue. Second marriage, December 9th, 1875 to Margaret S. J. McKay who died October 7th, 1882, having had two children. Third marriage, October 22nd, 1890 to Margaret J. Rodden Sloan who died September 5th, 1818, after having had two children.
