THE PICKENS FAMILY
D WILLIAM SMITH PICKENS, well known as Col. William Pickens was the son of Robert and Martha Smith Pickens; and was born in Anderson county, S.C. February 8th, 1823. he died May 20th, 1867, after having lived all his life on the old Pickens homestead. He was a well known and highly respected citizen and was elected by his follow countrymen to represent his State and County in several offical positions, among them being County Road Commissioner and representative in the Legislature. Before the Civil War he was Colonel of the Second Battalion, State Troops, and it was from this position he earned the title of Colonel William Pickens. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and furnished a greater part of the means to build a new church near his plantation.
Colonel William Picikens was married three times. His first wife was Julia Ann Welborn, who was born October 29th, 1825. His second wife was Mrs. Emiline Smith (nee Oliver) a daughter of Dr. Oliver. His third wife was the widow of Wiggington Phillips. Her maiden name was Martha Louisa Rush.

E ROBERT WELBORN PICKENS, oldest son of Col. William Smith and Julia Ann Welborn Pickens was born August 31st, 1847, on the old Robert Pickens homestead in Anderson County, and although now almost seventy-nine years of age has never lived at any other place than on the old Pickens lands. He still retains his strenght of mind and body, and does active work on the farm, and superintends the Sunday School at his Church. |

 ROBERT WELBORN PICKENS, taken at his home with his birthday cake, August 31, 1947, when he celebrated his one hundredth birthday anniversary. He was the last surviving Confederate veteran in this section and in his later years was much used as speaker at patriotic gatherings. He was deeply interested in family and state history and was a versatile conversationalist. |

People in the community wishing advice or those who stand in need of a friend go to him, and he is always willing to render any service possible. He joined the Confederate forces before the colse of the war, and spent some time in the Army.
Robert Welborn Pickens takes a great deal of interest in family history, and his valuable help and advice have had much to do with the making of this sketch of the family possible. He is well known throughtout the contry as an authority on upper S.C. history, and he gets many letters from all parts of the country asking for informatin about the family. All Pickenses are indebted to him for what he has done to preserve family traditions. On March 30th, 1871 he married Mary Catherine Wiggington, who has been his companion now for more than fifty-five years. F VIRGINIA PICKENS, daughter of Robert Welborn and Catherine Pickens, was born in Anderson County, S.C., April 7th, 1873. She married George W. La Boon , and for many years lived near Anderson Courthouse. Now they live about three miles east of the City of Greenville. G KATE PICKENS LABOON, daughter of George W. and Virginia Pickens LaBoon is a graduate of Winthrop College inSouth Carolina, and took a degree at Peabody College at Nashville, Tenn. F JULIA MARGARET PICKENS, daughter of Robert Welborn and Chatherine Pickens was born October 24th, 1875. She married Monroe C. Smith, and is living at Pickens, S.C. She is a member of Fort Sumter Chapter U.D.C., and also takes much interest in the community affairs around her.
Monroe C. Pickens is a son of Theodore and Esther Burdine Smith, and was born in Anderson county, S.C.

F FRANCES MARION PICKENS, daughter of Robert Welborn and Catherine Pickens was born in Anderson County, S.C., July 21st, 1879 and died October 13th, 1922. She married Rev. George A. F PRUDENCE IRENE PICKENS, daughter of Robert Welborn and Catherine Pickens was born August 24th, 1886, and died at the age of three years.-0-
F ANDREW LEE PICKENS, son of Robert Welborn and Catherine Pickens was born in Anderson County, S. C., March 6th, 1890, and is living at Greenville, South Carolina. He was educated at Furman University, Greenville, S.C., took a course at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Ky., andrecieved his M. A. degree at Richmond College. He entered the ministry in the Baptist church, and after serving as pastor for a few years, became a professor at Furman University Andrew is gifted with the pen and is the author of a number of magazine articles on historical and floricultural subjects. He also is the author of a book on the life of General Andrew Pickens, "Skyagunsta".
He married Belle Meares, of Greenville, S.C. June 14, 1922. They have one child:G Andrew Lee Pickens. -0-
F LAURA AGNEW PICKENS, daughter of Robert Welborn Pickens was born September 28th, 1893. She married Henry Garrison and lives with her parents on the old Pickens plantation. They have one sone:G Henry David Garrison. -0-
F WILLIAM HOLBERT PICKENS, son of Col. Willliam Smith Pickens and Julia Ann Welborn Pickens was born in Anderson County, South Carolina, June 19th, 1850, and died at Easely, South Carolina, January 30th, 1903. He served as warden and devoted much time looking after the work of this office. During the intensely trying days of 1876 when the government of the State of South Carolina passed from the Carpet Bagger Republican to the Democratic Party, he served as lieutenant of a company of Red Shirts and did much to help carry the election of that year for Wade Hampton, the standard bearer of the Democratic (White Man's) party. He was a successful farmer and also hardware business conducted a sheet metal shop. He was a member of the Methodist Church at Easley and served on the board of stewards of this church. |

On December 15th, 1875 William Holbert Pickens and Josephine Wiggington were united in marriage by Rev. George Rogers. Josephine Wiggington Pickens was born March 1st, 1854 and is now living on the old home place at Easley, S.C. Children:F William Luther Pickens, F Frank E. F WILLIAM LUTHER PICKENS, son of Willliam Holbert and Josephine Wiggington Pickens was born October 10th, 1876 and is living at Easley, S.C. He has served the city of Easley as clerk, and in 1917 and 1918 represented Pickens county in the south Carolina Legislature. On November 1st, 1906 he married Esther S. Johnson, who was born October 25th, 1881 and died January 20th, 1914. Children:G Lewis Holbert Pickens, G Kathryn Louise Pickens, G Frances Earle Pickens. -0-
G KATHRYN LOUISE PICKENS, daughter of William Luther and Esther Johnson Pickens was born at Macon, Ga., in 1909 and died in September 1910.
F FRANK E. PICKENS, son of William Hobert and Josephine Wiggington Pickens was born June 12th, 1878 and is living at Easley, S.C., where he has a hardware and sheet metal shop. He has served his city as alderman and water and light commissioner.

F ROBERT OLIN PICKENS, son of William Holbert and Josephine Wiggington Pickens was born November 21st, 1882 and is living at Spartanburg, S.C. He has a large sheet metal establishment in Spartanburg and in addition to this he is a successful farmer.

F RUFUS HOLBERT PICKENS, son of William Holbert and Josephine Wiggington Pickens was born July 7th, 1888 and is living at Clemmons, N.C., He is an electrical engineer and is the superintendent of the power plant of the Southern Power Company located at Idols, N.C. He is a member of the board of trustees of the public schools at Clemmons. In the month of January, 1913 Rufus Holbert Pickens and Celia Douthit of Clemmons, N.C. were married. E ANDREW WSHINGTON PICKENS, son of Col. William Smith and Julia Ann Welborn Pickens was born in Anderson County, S.C., January 21st, 1852 and died October 8th, 1921, just a few miles west of his birth place. He served as commissioner for several terms; was a kind neighbor and a good friend. On September 9th, 1877 he married Josephine Armathine Mullikin, who was born March 7th, 1859. On December 19, 1878 she married Warren Manning Smith, a son of John Collinsworth and Amanda Smith, and grandson of John and Martha Pickens Smith.
