for sometime in North Carolina and Tennessee but afterwards moved to Hillsboro, Oregon, where he has farming interests and also has a blacksmith shop.

He married September 9th, 1913, Marguerite Christina Wilkie who was born September 1, 1895, and they have the following children:

     F  ROBERT MALCOM BARTLETT, son of Rev. G. A. and Margaret Pickens Bartlett was born October 22, 1890, and was married on June 7, 1914 to Fannie Lee Tevis. He is now connected with the Beaumont Iron and Fondry Co. of Beaumont, Texas, where they make their home. They have one daughter:

     F  WILLIAM CAREY BARTLETT, son of Rev. G. A. and Margaret Pickens Bartlett ws born July 24, 1893. He has been twice married. His first wife was Ttheleen Nichels and the second Margaret Moore. To the latter he was married in October 1923. They have two children:

    G  Louise Bartlett, born August 31, 1918 is the daughter of William Carey and Ethleen Nichels Bartlett.

     E  MARTHA NANCY MARILDA PICKENS, youngest daughter of James Tarpley and Matilda Patton Pickens was a woman of high ideals and possessed a genial desposition. She lived with her father and mother, taking care of them until their death.
-----In 1894 she was married to Thomas Edwards and lived in Weaverville, N. C.
     The only child of Thomas and Martha Pickens Edwards is:
    F  Fred Pickens Edwards.

     E  FRANCIS TARPLEY PICKENS, son of James Tarpley and Matilda Patton Pickens, was born April 14, 1860 and grew to manhood on the old Pickens plantation, nine miles above Asheville, N. C. He attended Weaver College at Weaverville, N. C., and for a while taught school. He also acted as postmaster at Swannanoa a nember of years.
     On Decmeber 26, 1888, he married Clemma Penland, who was born January 20, 1868. She was a daugher of Nellie Carolyn and Samuel Erwin Penland. She was educated at Weaver College, taught for a short time in the public schools of Buncombe County. After her marriage she evoted her life to her home and family. For the first few years of their married life, they made their home at Swannanoa, but in 1904 they moved to Weaverville where they have since resided. Their home "Sleepy Holow" is situated just outside the town of Weaverville in a valley surrounded by high mountains. A number of the Rev Andrew Pickens family reunions have been held there.

     F  NELL PICKENS, daughter of Francis T. and Clemma Pickens, was graduated from Weaverville College in 1907, and after teaching in the Buncombe County schools for a ffew years, she took a hom economics course at the North Carolina College for Women. Following this she became home demonstration agent for Gaston County, holding this position for 11 years.
     In 1926 she entered Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City, for special work, receiving her masters degree in home economics in 1927. She is now a member of the faculty of Alabama Polytechynic Institute at Auburn, Alabama.

Nell is an ambitious young woman and tireless worker. She is much interested in family history and has helped to organize the Andrew Pickens Association.

     F  GLENN ERWIN (Dick) PICKENS, son of Francis T. and Clemma Pickens was born October 25, 1891. Since his graduation from Weaverville College in 1915, he has followed he profession of teaching and is now a member of Flat Creek High school faculty, at Weaverville, N. C.
     His work as teacher had carried him into different sections of the state and his jovial disposition has won for him many friends.

     F  ESTHER KATHARINE (Kate) PICKENS, daughter of Francis T. and Clemma PIckens was born February 20, 1894. She was educated at Weaver College, finishing there with the class of 1913, after which she taught school for four years.
     On June 15, 1918, she was married to Benjamin T. Day, a successful business man of Easley, S. C. He is president of the Easley Lumber Co., having held that position since he was 25 years of age. The two children of Ben T. Day and Kate Pickens Day are:

     F   EDITH PICKENS, daughter of Francis T. and Clemma Penland Pickens, was born February 15, 1896. She was graduated from Weaver College with the class of 1916. After teaching for a while she entered Maryville College at maryville, Tenn., and received her diploma from University of Tennessee in 1925. She is a talented musician. In 1929 she was married to John C. Joyner of Asheville, N. C. He is an alumnus of Wake Forest College and was admitted to the Asheville bar in 1925.

     F  FRANCIS TARPLEY PICKENS, JR. son of Francis T. and Clemma Penland Pickens was born at Weaverville, N. C., December 16, 1900. He is a mechanic. In 1921 he went to Oklahoma City and on February 9, 1923, he was married to Ruth Ray of that place. Later they returned to Weaverville where they now live.

     F  MARGARET PICKENS, daughte of Francis T. and Clemma Penland Pickens is a graduate of Weaver College, having finished in 1923. After teaching for a year she entered Maryville College, Maryville, Tenn., and in 1926 received her diploma from that college. She is interested in art and made a special study of this at marayville. She has also taken special cources at Colu bia University, N. Y. City and is now teaching at Knott's Island, N. C.

     F  LASSAPHINE (Lass) PICKENS, daughter of Francis T. and Clemma Penland Pickens was born Dec. 31, 1905. On August 10, 1924 she was maried t J. S. Kendall, a teacher of Weaver College, and they live at Weaverville. They have had more than an amateur's success in cultivation of fine flowers.
     Jennings Smith and Lassaphine Pickens Kendall have the following children:

     F  HUGH CURRY PICKENS, youngest living son of Francis T. and Clemma Penland Pickens, is with his parents at Weaverville, N. C. After graduating from Weaverville High school he entered Weaver College and is now a student there. In adition to his literary activities he has made a splendid athletic record.

     D  ELIZA ANN DORCAS PICKENS, daughter of Rev. Andrew and Catherine Weaver PIckens was born August 17th, 1820 and lived at Weaverville, North Carolina. She married Andrew J. Gill. Died August 14, 1912.
     The first child of Andrew J. and Eliza Ann Pickens gill, a girl died in infancy. Other children were:
