Chapter Nine


Which Give a Number of Family Records that are incomplete.

B  William Pickens

     WILLIAM PICKENS whoses ancestry is unknown, we are told, fought with General Marion during the Revolutionary war. After the war was over he lived on an estate granted to him by the king of england which was locted in the rice growing section of South Carolina. It is claimed that he was closely related to Governor Pickens.
     It is said that adjoining his land lived families by the name of Munnerlyn and Davis, and that he married a Miss Munnerlyn.
     This William Pickens is said to have had four children as follows:
    C  Andrew Pickens
    C  William Pickens,
    C  Alma Pickens,
    C  Martha Pickens.

     C  LAMA PICKENS, it is believed, married and moved to Texas.

     C MARTHA PICKENS, daughter of Willia Pickens married a Mr. Davis who moved to another part of the State. A son was born to them:
    D  Pickens Davis

     D  PICKENS DAVIS, we are told in a history of the Presbyterian Curch, lived near the Waxhaw District of Lancaster County, S.C.

     HARRY M. DAVIS, sho furnished the above information served in the "World War" as Captain and on account of effects of the war, moved to the mountains of North Caroina and lived near Black Mount Mountain. Captain Davis is a descendant of this William Pickens.

     B  DAVID PICKENS, whose parents have not yet been definitely located was born in South Caroina about 1785, and as all of the Pickens families at that time were living in Abbeville and Anderson counties it is practically certain that his place of birth

was in the upper part of the State. About 1815, he moved from South Caroina to Tenessee, but shortly after moving to that state, he almost drowned and soon afterwards passed away, his death being caused by the accident.
     About 1808 David Pickens married Susan Byers, also of South Carolina and they had one daughter
    C  Milinda Pickens.
     After the death of David Pickens in 1815, his wife Susan Byers Pickens, settled in Tennessee, probably near Frnakin, and afterward married Trestan Patton. She had a son, David Pickens Patton, by her second husband, and if other children their names are unknown to the writer.

     C  MALINDA PICKENS, daughter of David and Susan Byers Pickens was born in South Caroina bout 1810, and when she was about four or five years of age, her parencts moved t Goliad, TExas, where she died in 1887. Malinda Pickens patton was the mother of the following children:

    D  J. augustus Patton,
    D  Evelyn Patton,
    D  Margareta Patton,
    D  David Patton.
    Dr John Work Patton was born February 16th, 1808 and died March 16th, 1886.

     D  ISAAC PATTON, son of Dr. John Work and Malinda Pickens Patton has been lost sight of.
     D  J. AUGUSTUS PATTON, son of Dr. John Work and Malinda Pickens Patton was a prominent lawyer of Goliad, Texas (1915).

     D  EVELYN PATTON, daughter of Dr. John W. and Malnda Pickens Patton ws born in 1833, an after a long and useful life died in Texas in1916. In 1850 she was married to Edward Sims, and we have record of one daughter.
    D  Lula Sims.

     D  LULA SIMS, daughter of Evelyn and Edwards Sims, married Edgar Elliot Bramlette in 1884. We have record of only one daughter:
    Adelle Bramlette.

     D  ADELLE BRAMLETTE, daughter of Edgar Elliott and Lula Sims Bramlette married twice. Frist R. T. Ray and second E.G. Bischoff. She is now living at Austwell, Texas. (1926).

J O H N  F I N U S  P I C K E N S


     A letter from, Rev. Finus Roden Pickens, a minister of the Nortwest Texas Conference. Methoidst Episcopal Church, South, dated November 22, 1921, gives the following account of the family to which he belongs;
     JOHN FINUS PICKENS, it is said, was born in Tennessee, and moved to Texas. His children were:
    James Pickens,
    John Pickens
    Ada Pickens,
    Tennie Pickens,
    Mattie Pickens
    Lula Pickens,
    Joel Rivers Pickens


     JAMES PICKENS, son of John Finus Pickens, no record give.

     We have no record of what became of James Albert Pickens, Joel Milton Pickens, Elmer Franklin Pickens, and Charles Yoe Pickens, sons of Joel Rivers Pickens.

     FINUS RODEN PICKENS, son of Joel Rivers Pickens, is a minister and a member of the Northwest Texas Conference, of the M. E. Church South, and in 1923 serving Lubbock Circuit, and lived at Lubbock, Texas.

A N D R E W  M A R T I N  P I C K E N S


     B  ANDREW MARTIN PICKENS, whose parents have not yet been definitely determined, was born in Abbeville District of South Carolina, possibly, not very far from the date of 1776. About 1818, he, with his famiy, moved to Black's Bens, on the Alabama River, in Alabama, where they lived about a year and then moved to Greenville, Alabama, and wer among the first settlers of that place. He married Isabella Caldwell of Abbeville, S.C., and they had the following children:

     (Note:--It is said that the father of Andrew Martin Pickens was captured by the Indians and burned at the stake,, and that he was a brother of General Andrew Pickens. Family traditions say that Captain Joseph Pickens, brother of General Andrew Pickens was captured by the British, turned over to the Indians and burned at the stake. A field book of Revolutionary Officers in the Colonial Army gives the date of the killing of Captain Joseph Pickens as June 1781, at Ninety Six, S.C. Tradition also tell us the John Pickens and James Pickens, both brothers of Captain Joseph Pickens, were lost at Ninety Six during the Revolutionary War. History also shows that Andrew Pickens, the father of Captain Joseph Pickens was appointed to appraise lands for a Mr. Andrew Martin in Augusta County, Virginia, March 2nd, 1749.)

     D  ANDREW MARTIN BLACK, son of Thomas J. and Mary Ann Pickens Black was born September 15th, 1821 and died April 5th, 1879. No record of family has been furnished.

     D  ROBERT W. BLACK, son of Tomas J. and Mary Ann Pickens Black was born June 6th, 1823, and died at Mobile Moore Hospital, april 9th, 1864. Family record not furnished.

     D  FRANCIS MARION BLACK, son of Thomas J. and Mary Ann Pickens Black was born November 4th, 1825 and died January 20th, 1915, at the age of almost ninety years. He was a veteran in the Confederate war. On December 20th, 1849, he was married to Emily T. Thomas. the following are names of their children:

A  J O H N  P I C K E N S


     A very interesting sketch concerning John Pickens has been furnished by Melvin Mashburn Pickens, of White Stone, Union County, South Carolina. He says that three brothers, John Pickens, Robert Pickens and Andrew Pickens came to america, from Ireland, but on account of all early records in the family being lost, it is not known just when they arrrived n America. However, he says, that some time before the Revolutionary War, John Pickens came to America, afterwards came South, and settled at a place called Grindle Shoals Bridge. He was later drowned there. The names of the children of John Pickens were:

          The son mentioned as drowned was lost while crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

     D  JOHN HAYDEN PICKENS, born December 26th, 1817, lived in Union County, South Carolina, and was widley known throughout the county as an honest, hard-working farmenr. He was a deacon in the church, and was faithful in the discharge of his duties. When a new church was built in 1889, he furnished most of the lubmer for the new building and ws given the honor

of tacking the first shingle on the new structure. By his thrift, he had bought and owned at the time of his death, in March 1909, a farm of three hundred acres near Jonesville. John Hayden Pickens was married three times. First when about twenty-one or two years old to a Miss McWhorter. Second wife was a Miss Shell, and third Miss Harmon, the dates of the marriages not being known at present.

     E  JAMES WYLEY PICKENS, son of John Hayden Pickens andhis second wife, Miss Shell, was born August 1st, 1850, in Union County, S.C., where he lived hisentire life. On June 22nd, 1873, he married Selena Harmon, (born December 15th, 1838), and to this union the following children were born:

    F  Leona Carolina Pickens.
