Riley, Andrew Ferrell (b. 12 MAR 1846, d. 02 JUN 1920)
Note: Andrew was a farmer in the Blanche and Roperton area most of
his life.

A. F. Riley was elected to the school board on August 7, 1890
in district 17 (Cash Point), he served several terms.

Andrew Ferrell and his wife owned 166 acres in the 17th
district of Lincoln County. Their farm lie at the headwater of
Limestone Creek between present day Cash Point and U-Take-It.
It lay on both sides of present day Highway 110. It was near
where the TVA Power lines cross Highway 110. Ferrell built the
house and barn which is at the intersection of Highway 110 and
Kelly's Creek Road. This house was later bought by Jim
Hamilton and inherited by his daughter Mary Lou Hamilton
Franklin. The house is still standing today.

After the death of Elizabeth Riley, Ferrell's stepmother,
Ferrell and Martha moved into the house owned by Samuel and
Elizabeth. They lived there until they moved into the house at
the intersection of Highway 110 and Kelly's Creek Road. They
lived there until moving to Huntsville, AL in 1905. They moved
to a pretty house at the north-east corner of the old Fair
Grounds on North Church St. They lived there until they died.
Their son Sam Riley, his wife Myrtle and sister Toy lived there
until the house burned in 1936. A new house was then built on
the location. Sam and Myrtle lived there until their deaths.

Andrew and Martha lived in Blanche TN until 1873 when the moved
to Elkton, TN and lived until 1879, where upon they returned to
Blanche to live. In November 1905, he and his wife moved to
Huntsville Al. where they lived until their deaths. Andrew
worked for a lumber mill before his retirement. His son John
worked there also as a laborer.

Andrew was proud of his role with the Confederate Army in the
Civil War, he was a member of the Confederate Veterans
Association of Madison Co. Camp 357 which was better known as
Egbert J. Jones Camp of the United Confederate Veterans. He
joined the Association in April 1913. He was a regular member,
holding no offices, but attending many meetings. He was listed
as a color guard at one meeting in May 1913. His dues were
only $1.00 a year. The Association provided a library for its
members to come and read or check out books. His grave was
marked with Confederate Soldier marker, it has since
disappeared. It was put there by his comrades at the
Confederate Veterans Association.

Andrew enlisted in the 44th Tennesseee Infantry Co. A as a
private along with his brother Samuel and friend George T.
Roper . His name on the records of the 44th Tennessee spell
his name as PHAROAH RILEY, records state that this company of
men was from Lincoln County, TN. He enlisted on December 7,
1861 at Camp Trousdale in Sumner County, TN. He volunteered in
Lincoln County and was shipped to Camp Trousdale with thousands
of other recruits. His enlistment was for a period of 12
months. He was wounded in Mississippi and was sent to the
hospital at Columbus June 3, 1862. His brother Samuel had died
in Columbus a few weeks earlier. The records of the 44th TN
from here on are incorrect. It is thought that he may have
been confused with his brother. Records show that he died of
his wounds on Sept. 21, 1863. This was wrong however. Record
keeping at that time was not very accurate. Andrew then was
regrouped with another unit at Corinth. It was that unit which
he drew a pension on. Andrew then became a Private in Co. I
20th Calvary Tennessee, in the Confederate Army.

From Andrew's Confederate Pension Application dated Oct. 27,
1914:

" I enlisted in Co. I 20th TN Cav. in Sept. 1863, at the age
of 17 years. After the evacuation of Nashville by Hood in
December 1864, the army fell back through Lincoln Co. TN, my
old home. I was with my Lt., Lt. Jim Byars and four or five
others dropped out to spend a day or two at home expecting to
catch up with the army and rejoin the company, I and three
others left our horses at John Hamilton's, six miles away from
my home, expecting to return with them and rejoin the command.
After we had been at home for four days we went for our horses
and rode 38 miles towards Tuscumbia to cross and join the Army,
which we understood had crossed there and on being told that
the Federals were there we returned home and stayed 2 weeks and
then tried to cross at Brown's Ferry and found we could not
cross and returned home and I stayed in the woods over a month
with my horse. Then I came out and was captured right away and
put in prison in Nashville and held until I took the oath of
Allegiance. I was 18 years old when I took the oath, the older
people around had told me that the war was practically over and
my command was far away somewhere and I did not know where they
were until one of the boys shortly returned after the
surrender.
I have been on the pension rolls for a year, my family
consists of my wife, widowed daughter, and her little child,
and a son who is crippled from being struck by a train. I have
no property except a few household goods and a cow. I work as
a night watchman, but loose a good deal of time for which lost
time I get no pay. "
Signed:
A. F. Riley

Andrew had trouble getting his pension started. He was listed
as being charged as a deserter from the Confederate Army on
Dec. 20, 1864 and was not on the rolls of the 20th TN Cavalry.
He gave this statement to government officials who used it to
find out if he really fought in the Civil War. The governments
findings were that he had enlisted in the Confederate Army in
Corinth Mississippi and not in Tennessee. Federal records
showed that he indeed had been captured and was imprisoned in
Nashville. He did take the Oath of Allegiance to the United
States on February 2, 1865. He was given an honorable discharge
and the charge of desertion was dropped. This problem would
again resurface when his widow, Martha, would try to apply for
his pension upon his death in 1920. A judge in Madion Co. Al.
ruled that Martha was entitled to a widow's pension.

Andrew died of paralysis due to a stroke. At the time of his
death, all that he and Martha owned was some household
furniture valued at $50, 3 Shoats (hogs), and a clock. They
lived with their son Samuel on North Church Street and Martin
Pike Rd. in Huntsville Al.
