Pea Ridge Relations 1168 (Notes Pages)

Paysinger, Cynthia Adeline (b. 23 FEB 1856, d. 29 JUL 1925)

Note: Cynthia was one of 13 children. When the war broke out her
father decided to move to Arkansas to avoid it. He had no
desire to be a part of the war, but he was drafted in
Mississippi on his way to Arkansas. Thomas fought in the
battle of Shiloh and survived, but died later that year of
disease. So, in November of 1862, Cynthia's mother, Adeline,
was left with no husband, no support, and 6 children 12 years
old and under. Adeline decided to take her children back to
Lincoln County, Tennessee. Times were hard, especially for a
widow with a house full of young children to be fed. Mary
Adeline's brother Carroll McRee, let her family live in a house
he owned. She worked as a Mid-wife, and supported the children
as best she could. Cynthia married Neil "Bud" Smith on
October 11, 1877, in Lincoln County, Tennessee. She and Bud
had 4 children. Cynthia died on July 29, 1925 in Limestone
County, Alabama at the age of 69. She is buried in Gatlin
Cemetery in Limestone County, Alabama.

Baptized at the Kelley's Creek Baptist Church on Aug. 22, 1887.
Later moved her letter to Piney Grove Baptist Church, then to
Cash Point when it was formed.

Smith, Mary Ann (b. 1846)
Note: Mary Ann had three children out of wedlock. It is told by her
brother John W. Smith that this was the cause of the separation
of her parents.

Mary Ann sold her interest in the estate of her father, Stephen
Smith, to F.M. Cross (Cross Cem. Family) Dec. 19, 1887 for
$25.00. Lincoln Co. TN Deed Book SE, pages 500 and 501. This
land was located near Cross Cemetery in the community of
Roperton. The land was part of the Bracken Roper estate, who
died in 1866.
F. M. Cross's daughter Jesse later married Mary Ann's brother
Nathaniel.

She bought 59 acres in the district #17 on the 23rd of February
1880. This land joined her uncle James 'Tricky Jim' Smith and
Rawls and Griffis. Deed book JJ pages 173-174 Lincoln Co. TN

Little else is known of her or her children.

Smith, John William Reverend (b. MAY 1858, d. 25 AUG 1935)
Note: In 1896 John began a Sunday School the Roperton Schoolhouse,
there he taught and was appointed Superintendent of the school
on May 14, 1896.

On March 28, 1896 a Rev. John Smith from Elkton Tn church was
at the organization of the Cash Point Baptist Church. He
helped organize the Church at Cash Point.

John was a farmer and country preacher. He owned land in the
Carter Mill Area of northern Limestone County. He made a
living as a farmer. It is noted that in his travels as a
minister that he did not receive payment for preaching. He was
a very respected member of the community. He was a Methodist
preacher before joining the Baptist Church.

John was the first to join the Walnut Hill Baptist Church. He
was ordained as a Baptist Minister September 13, 1908.

He preached at several churches before forming the Sardis
Spring Baptist Church about 6 miles north of Athens Al. The
Church was formed August 1915, with the first building erected
1917. The church stood on land neighboring John's and
Lizzie's. He gave land for the Sardis Springs Cemetery and was
the first to be laid to rest in that cemetery.

From Miss Lillian Roberts' biography which is in the Lillian
Roberts Library at the Sardis Springs Church:

After founding the Sardis Springs Baptist Church Grandpa Smith
(John) was also among the founders of several churchs in the
Baptist Association. When there was anyone sick and needed
help John would go and stay until they were better. People
went to church in wagons, buggies or on horse back. They would
have associational Sunday School meetings (all denominations)
that would last over the weekend. The delegates would go and
be guests in the homes.

When Lillian was 2, she and her parents lived in Happy Hollow.
The neighbors wold have singings in the homes at night. Then
her grandpa Smith started coming each week th have prayer
meetings in the Roberts home. After Lillian and her parents
moved from this house, the families near by continued having
prayer meetings and singing. Rev. John W. Smith organized the
Elk River (Happy Hollow) Baptist Church and built the church
building close by. It is now consolidated with Maple Wood
Baptist Church and is called the Elkwood Baptist Church. The
building is located on the highway from Athens to Pulaski, TN.
Grandpa Smith was a Sunday School man. If the community didn't
have a Sunday School going, then he would start one. He would
walk from Isom Chapel to Concord to preach.

From the Alabama Courier Thursday, August 27, 1935: Rev. J. W.
Smith Dead at age 77
At his home in the Carter Mill section last Sunday, Rev. John
William Smith, one of the oldest and most esteemed citizens of
that part of the county passed away after a short illness at
the age of 77. He had preached the everlasting truths of the
Holy Writ for more than half a century and ws devoted to his
church and to his Master. He was a leader in many church
enterprises in his sections, was the founder of the beautiful
church at Sardis Spring, and donated the land for a cemetery at
that church and was first to be laid to rest there Monday
afternoon, McConnell in charge.
He is survived by three sons and two daughters and his aged
widow. No finer a worthwhile citizen lived in the county than
this humble minister who served the people without money and
without price, giving to his fellow man all he had in good
advice and right teaching.

Smith, Nathaniel David (b. 16 JAN 1862, d. 01 JAN 1930)
Note: Items from the Fayetteville Observer;
May 4, 1882
MILLVILLE
We learn that two Lincoln County bloods, Ned Smith and Huse
Cross had a quarrel Sunday, the 23rd ult., at the Kelley Creek
Church. Cross gave Smith the lie and received from Smith a
lick, which landed him on his back. Smith went in on top and
gave him a few jolts, until Cross said to let him up out of the
dust with his new coat.

Ned was Nathaniel's nickname, it came from the sound made when
pronouncing N.D. (his initials). Ned was a farmer, a simple
man who rented the homes in which his family lived. He died in
Huntsville AL after a 14 year battle with Tuberculosis. His
daughter Tennie describes him as a good man who did no wrong to
anyone. He stressed family values, honesty, and morality.
Ned's funeral was paid for by swapping some harness and 2 pigs
to Toney Rainey.
