Mitchell, Lewis Cass (b. 20 JUL 1844, d. 03 FEB 1928)
Note: Lewis Cassie was a Civil War Veteran. He entered the
Confederate army on Oct 22, 1862. He fought with the 32nd
Tennessee infantry. He fought at the Battle of Murfreesboro,
Battle of Chickamauga, and campaigns into North Carolina. He
was captured at the Battle of Donelson and later exchanged for
Union prisoners. He was wounded April 24,1863 at the Battle of
Murfreesboro. He was also wounded on May 27, 1864 at the Battle
of Chickamauga. He left the service of the Confederacy on Dec.
15, 1864 and walked home to Lincoln Co. with his brother. He
took the Oath of Amnesty on Jan 14, 1865 in Pulaski TN. Lewis
returned to farm work in Lincoln Co. TN. Lewis' Military
description: Complexion: Dark, Hair: Black, Eyes: Black,
Height: 5ft 4in.

It is told in the family that near the Civil War's end, Lewis
and his brother were returning home. They were walking back to
Lincoln County from the Battle of Chickamauga, which happened
near Chattanooga, TN. One morning after Lewis and his brother
awoke from a nights sleep in a barn, the brother told Lewis
that he could not go on home. The brother was thought to have
suffered a wound during the battle from which he was healing.
The brother told Lewis to go on home without him. He said, "I
think I would like to live here as any place." The two
brothers parted company, never to see or hear from each other
again. Lewis returned home to the hills of Kelly's Creek and
Millville, his father Clem Marcus had died at the onset of the
war. Lewis's mother had died when he was a child. It was a few
months later that he married Sarah Jane 'Sallie' Hamilton.
Sallie lived in the Kelly's Creek area south of the Elk River.

Note from Kenneth Smith:
After hearing this story I set out to find who this brother
could be. I found that Lewis had only one (1) full brother
(Thomas Ephraim) and one (1) half brother (James Ezekiel).
Ephraim returned to Lincoln Co. and married Vashti Brown. The
half brother went to Texas in 1875 and began his family. If
there is any other brother I haven't found any record of him.
After much research it appears that the original story of
James' visit to Texas was the basis for this story. James
never contacted Lewis after leaving for Texas. The story has
probably changed over the years as it was handed down.

Lewis often told his grandchildren not to complain about the
food they ate. He explained that while in service to the
Confederacy, he and the men of his unit were hungry due to the
lack of provisions. While marching from a battle, they came
upon a cornfield. The men gathered the corn and parched it.
They lived on parched corn and water for 3 weeks before being
resupplied.

After the Battle of Chickamauga, he and other men from his unit
tried to rejoin their fellow troops. They slept in the woods,
barns or anywhere they could in order to avoid the enemy. One
night the men slept under a tree. After finding food, they
proceeded on in search of their unit. Several miles down the
road Lewis realized that he had left his gun under the tree. He
decided to proceed on and to forget about the gun. Lewis
rejoined his unit and served until his capture near Pulaski,
Tennessee.

Lewis received a Civil War Veterans Pension beginning in 1915.
He and Sallie received $10 a month. When Lewis died in 1928,
the pension was cut to $7 a month, which Sallie received until
her death in 1933. Lewis and Sallie are buried in the Gatlin
Cemetery.

The following is a letter to the Confederate Pension Board by
Lewis C. Mitchell dated 1915:

Mr. Frank A. Moses,
Dear Sir:
In Reply to your question. I was left at
Murfreesboro sick some time at the last of November 1864 and
when I was able to go, I started in the direction of my
company. The Yankees got between me and my company and I was
stopping over with a man by the name of Woodard, north of
Pulaski. On the morning of the l3th day of January, 1865 the
Yankees captured me at this man's house and carried me to
Pulaski and there and then I was forced to take the oath.
Yours
Respectfully
L. C.
Mitchell

From the Fayetteville Observer March 1, 1928:

Mr. L. C. Mitchell, aged 83 years, died of old age at his home
at Cash Point February 3.

selling this property.

Lincoln Co., TN Deed Book D-5, page 395-- Sallie Mitchell gave
to her daughter Maggie Maddox, 52 Acres, 18 September, 1928.

Alma Magnusson told me that her grandmother Sallie Hamilton
Mitchell gave her farm to her father and his siblings. She
said that Lewis had always lived in the hills and did not know
how to work flat land. He said that he prayed about it and
then told everybody that he was going to go to this flat land
and make a success of it. He was going to learn how to farm
flat land. This farm was located on present day Asa Smith Road
at Cash Point. Maddox Lane, which runs off Asa Smith Rd., is
the road to the place where the old log home of Lewis and
Sallie was.

This house was a log house with dirt floors. It had a hall
(breezeway) through the center of the house. Alma Magnusson
told me that it was only when Lewis and Sallie got old did they
have a wooden floor installed. John B. and his family lived
with the Lewis and Sallie. After Sallie gave her farm to her
children, John sold his part to D. F. Boggs. John had a rather
large family and he could not make a living on 42 acres. John
and his family, Sallie included moved to the Piney Grove area
of Limestone Co. Alabama. This was just across the state line.
There John rented a farm and made a living for his family.
John and Minnie lived in the Pinedale/Piney Grove area the rest
of their lives.
