!William B. Putman, Jr., Hyannis Port, Ma.

!This family began in the small village of Puttenham, in
Herfordshire, north of London, England. As with many early
families, there were no last names, and so the town names were
used. In our case it was SO and SO de Puttenham. The "de"
is, of course, French, but our ancestors were Normans who came
to England with "William the Conqueror," in 1066.

!As last names became the chic thing to have, the "de" or "of"
was dropped and the fief holders simply began using their
titles as last names. We began using Puttnam and the other
folks used their titles such as Baker, Smith, and Lord as their
last names. This was all well and good if you could spell. Many
of our ancestors could not handle that, so we were at the mercy
of the clerks and
scribes who would write a name as they heard it. Hence our
branch was called Putnam, Puttnam, Puttman, and by the 1700's
it was solidified into Putman. Our roots were the same, but
different spellers were involved.

!ROGER PUTTENHAM, SENIOR, and his wife Alina, maiden name
unknown, gave birth to a child that they named after his
father, Roger. Roger II, will be the next in this lineage.
