Rawls, Robert Maurice (b. 06 JAN 1862, d. 22 JUL 1936)
Note: Robert Maurice Rawls was a newspaperman for over 40 years in
Athens Al. He was the prominent known owner of the Alabama
Courier in Athens Al. He acquired the paper about 3 years
after it was founded in 1880. He formed a partnership with Mr.
J. J. Turrentine to purchase the predominantly democratic
newspaper. Mr. Turrentine withdrew from the paper in 1884 and
Robert became the sole proprietor from then on. In May 1886 he
was elected to treasurer of the Alabama Press Association,
which was a position he held for sometime.

Robert was about 11 years old when his father died, and up to
that time lived on the homestead farm. With only a few terms
of common schooling, he spent a year learning the printer's
trade at the office of the Whig and Tribune at Jackson, TN, and
after that was a journeyman printer at various places in
Tennessee and in states further west. After working at the
"Fayetteville Observer" for 18 months, he took a job at the
"Sentinel" in Lynchburg. Until January 1883 he was a telegraph
editor of the Nashville World.

On January 6, 1883, he acquired the Alabama Courier in Athens,
Al., and his forty-three (43) years as editor and publisher
made him a veteran of his profession. He made the Alabama
Courier one of the strong and influential newspapers of
Northern Alabama. He owned the building in which his newspaper
plant was located and had completed facilities for newspaper
work and commercial printing. The Courier circulated
throughout Limestone and adjoining counties. It was a
democratic paper, corresponding to Mr. Rawls' personal
politics.

From 1916 to 1924, a period of 8 years and 3 months, Mr. Rawls
was postmaster of Athens, during the Wilson, Harding, and
Coolidge administrations. He served 4 years on the City
Council, was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church
and the Athens Kiwanis Club. He became a real estate owner in
Athens, comprising his home on South Clinton Street, four
dwelling houses and three business houses, and other property.

In the 1911 Athens Telephone book Robert's phone number is 63.
