Union Grove Assembly of God

The Union Grove Assembly of God Church began in the early l940’s, though no one can pinpoint the exact date. It is located at 4087 Union Road, Richton.

The "founders" of the church were Yancy and Clara Mills, the parents of Mrs. S. J. (Clara Jean) Henderson. She said her parents had visited several churches, but something was missing in what they felt they wanted and needed in worship. The pastor of a church they attended had been preaching from the Book of Acts in the Bible about the early church reaching out; so, one day her mother said to her husband, "Let’s build a church!" This early beginning of a few members of the Union Grove Church has now grown to about 80 members.

Mr. and Mrs. Mills, along with a visiting revival preacher, began to cut logs to build a church. Others joined in and donated logs for the first church. Mrs. Henderson remembers, as a small child, "carrying water up the hill" to her father and the other workers as they labored to build. The first church building is near where the pastorium is today.

As the church grew, a bigger block building was built, which was later bricked. This included Sunday School space. A new sanctuary was erected about ten years ago.

The church has been mission-minded and has helped support missionaries through the years.

Their annual events include a Homecoming in October; also, an Old Fashioned Day when people dress in clothing of earlier years.

Their regular services meet: Sunday - 10 A.M. Sunday School; 11 A.M. Worship and 6 P.M. Worship. Wednesday - 7:15 P.M. Service and every other Wednesday, Royal Rangers meet.

The Christ’s Ambassadors groups, ages 3 - 11 and 12 - 35, meet at 5 P.M. on Sunday night.

Rev. Kevin Luker has been Pastor of the church for 4 years. The church phone is: (601) 989-3140.
