PLEASANT RIDGE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

The Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church is located on Martin Luther King Drive in the Knobtown Community. The present pastor is Rev. Shelby Singleton. The church was begun in the 1890’s, possibly in the cotton fields of the community, according to Ophelia Wilson. Some of the founding members were Paul Leverette, Sr., Paul Leverette, Jr., Hiram Leverette, Henry Leverette, Fred Leverette, Caro Leverette, and others. The present Chairman of the Stewards is Bro. Walter Shumac.

The first building was a frame building. The church now meets in a lovely brick structure. Plans are in the making to raise money and construct two additional Sunday School rooms and enlarge the Fellowship Hall.

Pleasant Ridge Church started out as a African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church but united with other Methodists, several years ago, and became the Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church.

Services are as follows: Every Sunday morning, Sunday School is at 9:30 AM and worship at 11:00 AM. On the 1st Sunday, after a covered-dish dinner at the church, services begin at 2:30 PM and go to 5:00 PM, which include singing, testimonies and preaching by the pastor. On the 3rd Sunday evening, services begin at 6:00 PM and go until about 7:30 PM.

There is an active Men and Ladies Group in the church. Presently, the ladies are studying the Book of James, taught by Ophelia Wilson. Their theme for the year is I Corinthians 13, the Love chapter of the Bible.

The men of the church have a Male Chorus, and they give musical programs throughout the year. The offerings taken at these concerts goes to help others in the community who may have been burned out or lost their job.

The church has a total membership of about 150 members; however, some of whom are disabled and unable to attend. There are about 55 active members.

Visitors are always welcome to become a part of this church and its work for the Lord in this community.
