New Providence Missionary Baptist Church
The New Providence Missionary Baptist Church was established in 1892, making it one of our oldest churches in the county. Rev. Charlie Hudson was the founding pastor.
The church has added to their building several times. These projects were: in 1928, when R. O. Bryant was pastor; in 1931, when Esau Hinton was pastor; and, in 1932, when Lonnie Boykin was pastor. The church burned in 1971 and was rebuilt by 1974.
According to Betty Knight, a member of New Providence, in 1934, the following men were deacons: Ernest Montgomery, William Moulds, Albert Norwood , L. C. Wiley, and Nathaniel Taylor
The present deacons are Hal Taylor and Cain Moore. M. C. James has been elected a deacon but has not yet been ordained.
Rev. James Lett, who retired in December of 2002, served the church as pastor for 31 years. The church is now in the process of selecting a pastor. Rev. Norman L. Patton preached during July and August. Rev. Willie C. Jones will preach September and October, and Rev. Eddie Pierce will preach during November and December. After this time, a vote will be taken, and one of these men will be selected as pastor.
The church has Sunday School every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and Worship at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.on the first and third Sundays of the month. Prayer meeting is at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. The church has a combined choir led by their pianist, Mary "Winkie" Johnson. The church has about 75 active members.
Visitors are always welcome at New Providence Missionary Baptist Church. The church is located on Highway 57, about a mile south of Leakesville.
