Mt Olive Missionary Baptist Church

The Rev. Spencer Moncrief, Sr. presently serves as Pastor of the Mt Olive Missionary Baptist Church, located on Martin Luther King Drive in Knobtown Community.

This church has worship services on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month at 11 a.m., and from 2:30 p.m to 4 p.m. in the afternoon. The afternoon services include congregational singing, special music, testimonies and messages from the Word of God by the Pastor. Sunday School is at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday services are at 7 p.m. The church has a Vacation Bible School each year, also.

The Mt Olive Missionary Baptist Church is affiliated with the Second Sweet Pilgrim Baptist Association, the Mississippi Baptist State Convention, and the National Baptist Convention,USA.

 

According to Oliver Walley, some early members of the church were: Leanord Walley, Jett Nelson, Dave Leverette, Will McCann, Napoleon Leverette, Sr., Eddie Houze, Lee Ed Leverette, and N. C. Abrahams. The present deacons are: Oliver Walley, Chairman; Odis Whigham, and Earnest Walley.

 

Mt. Olive Church has an active youth program led by Lynette Walley. Their youth Choir is led by Hope Lancaster. Young people are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities. An annual Youth Week is also held. The Adult Choir is led by Mattie McCann.

One of the oldest members of the church is Hiwatha Packer, now almost 88, who now lives in a rest home. She still is very much interested in the church, and states the Church has always be a place of inspiration for her through the years.

The Church was established in the 1880’s, and the present place of worship was built in 1964. It replaced a wooden structure building. About two years ago, the church added a drive-through to provide access during rainy weather.
