The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, often referred to as the Mormon Church, and also because one of the books they study is The Book of Mormon. They have a Church or Branch in Greene County. It was first located in 1893 in Red Hill Community, but later moved to Sand Hill. It is known as the Sand Hill Branch.On August 19, 1894, Brother Alexander Cochran was ordained a Priest and set apart as President of the Branch of the Red Hill Branch, of Mississippi. There were fourteen charter members when the branch was organized, among them were B. J. Pope and John McLain, Sr., who were set apart as teachers. Two other early members were Alexander Cochran, and Melvina Cochran.
In 1940, the Red Hill Branch was moved to Sand Hill and became known as the Sand Hill Branch. A building was constructed at that time, known as a Chapel, that served until 1970 when the present attractive facility was erected.
Their services on Sunday include Sacrament Meeting at 9 a.m., Sunday School at 10 a.m., and Priesthood and Relief Society at 11 a.m.
Some of the present leaders are: Owen Strickland, Branch President; Lavon McLain and Birl Clark, Counselors; Gary Baugh, Elder Quorum; President, Diane McLain; Relief Society President, Judy Carol; and Parnell Music and Preal McLain, Home Teacher.
The Sand Hill Branch has about 160 members with an average attendance of around 40. Visitors are always welcome.
The church is located on Highway 42, across from the Sand Hill School.
