LEAKESVILLE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

This Methodist Church is located in the downtown Leakesville area at 1806 Paulding Road. This church was begun on July 5, 1888, when John J. McInnis gave to the Methodist Episcopal Church (the name at that time) an acre of land "for the cause of Christ". In June of 1892, 1 1/2 acres of land were added as a residence for the preacher of the church. The first building was built sometime after the land was donated, and might have been a log building.

A second church was built but was destroyed during a storm in 1948. The windows were salvaged from the storm’s destruction. The third church building is the present church, and has the windows from the second church in its sanctuary. In 1950, a beautiful stained glass window was given in memory of Jake Green, Sr., and placed above the choir loft. It remains the centerpiece today. The name of the church was changed at this time and remains that today.

Regular Sunday services for this church’s 84 members are: Sunday School 10 AM; Worship Services at 11 AM and 6 PM. The Wednesday service is at 6 PM. Rev. Don Harrison has been Pastor for one year, and Fred Dobbins is the Music Director.

Youth activities include meetings at 6 PM on Sunday evening, special programs, retreats and Youth Night Out. The children also have special activities on Sunday at 6 PM. A Bible School is always held during the summer,

A special Bible Study is held on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 10:30 AM. This is always open to anyone. The Methodist Men and Methodist Women also meet on a monthly basis for special programs and missions discussions..

The church sponsors various mission activities including: Assisting the Fellowship of Christian Students at Green County High, giving support to Turner-Duvall Retirement Village, a Clothes Closet equipped with clothes and household items for one who needs immediate help, and a Food Pantry available for assistance during misfortunes. Lunches are often delivered to shut-ins and those recuperating from various situations.

The church has stayed faithful through the years, and many have received inspiration and guidance for their lives through its ministry. Today, the doors of Leakesville United Methodist Church are always open to anyone wishing to worship our Savior. The church telephone number is 394-5114.
