Judy West, a descendant of John West, who lives near Houston, Tx., has
done considerable research on this line. She has found a copy of a
passport through Twiggs County, Ga., in the early 1800's, where a Evans
attested to the fact that he had known John West for many years. I had
already found a document where John West witnessed a document of the sale
of land in Sumter/Kershaw County South Carolina by Thomas Avera to a
Evans about 1812.
There is said to be Averas and perhaps some Kittrells and Wests buried in
a cemetery at the forks of the Lynches River, near Bishopville.
Mrs West found that John West served in the Mississippi Legislature for
about 10 years before the Secession. Also, after researching old records
in Wayne County, Ms., she found land in an isolated part of the County
previously owned by John West. She located the owners and found, that
while hunting two brothers, had come upon some old headstones. They took
her to a remote place and there found two headstones one marked Hon. John
West died 65 years old and Lavenia Hayes. It is believed that Vincent
West the father of John is also buried here and others.
At the time of his death this burial place was near a busy road that was
a good place to cross the creek. It is believed that John and others had
a mill there.
